Abstract

The solution to the torpedo boat problem was believed to be a bona fide small ship of great speed and not a vessel constructed on the boat principle. It was thought that the Mersey class of 'torpedo cruisers' with their extensive torpedo armament and high speed would eventually be replaced by a 3,000 ton high speed which in turn would be replaced by a 4000 ton protected torpedo ram.
