Abstract

Following the unsuccessful trials of the Polyphemus, during which she only achieved her designed speed of 17.5 knots for a short period of time, it was decided to replace her locomotive boilers with cylindrical multitubular boilers. Problems had also occurred with the forward and broadside torpedo tubes casting serious doubts as to her effectiveness as a torpedo ram.
