Under the direction of Admiral Jaurez Commander of the French Channel Squadron a Thornycroft torpedo boat armed with a spar torpedo attacked and sank the Bayonaise and another unnamed vessel. The experiments proved that it was possible for a torpedo boat armed with a spar torpedo to sink another vessel in motion without damaging itself.
